Garrett is growing! Since August 1994, we have annexed over 560 acres of prime industrial and residential greenfield sites into our city. Much of this ground lies between North Taylor Road and County Road 19 . It is accessible from State Road 8 to the north and North Taylor Road to the west. It lies only 1.5-2.0 miles from Interstate 69 and 1/2 mile from the main CSX rail line. The ground is suitable for development and municipal water and sewer mains are readily accessible.

The Garrett Underpass (State Road 327), provides easy, unobstructed access to areas north and south of the CSX railroad tracks, thereby increasing business and development opportunities.

Garrett's housing market is also growing. Six subdivisions, containing 309 lots have been approved in the past thirteen years; housing construction in these subdivisions is underway. One-hundred, seventy new single-family dwellings have been constructed in Garrett since 1995.

Two new commercial buildings have recently been completed in downtown Garrett, and the restoration of the old Sacred Heart Hospital into a senior living center is now complete.

The Garrett Municipal Utilities provide utility services to customers within their respective service areas. The Water Utility serves customers within Garrett. The Wastewater Utility serves customers within Garrett and Altona. The Electric Utility service area extends into Keyser Township beyond the city limits. The utilities are headed by the Utilities Superintendent.

Electric - The Garrett Municipal Electric Utility operates and maintains the electric system throughout the utility service area. It repairs lines and transformers, installs poles and clears tree branches from line easements. Approximately 2,600 poles, 900 transformers and 43 miles of line deliver electricity to 3,268 residential and commercial customers.

Wastewater Treatment - The Wastewater Treatment Utility operates the wastewater treatment plant and six lift stations. The plant treats sewage effluent that is collected from the 22+ miles of sanitary sewer lines under Garrett. The plant has a daily capacity of 1,200,000 gallons. An average 625,000 gallons of effluent, collected from 2,000+ customers, is treated daily.

Water Utility - The Water Utility operates the Water Treatment Plant, four wells and two water towers. It distributes water to approximately 2,000 customers through 21 miles of water lines. The utility has a daily capacity of 2.2 million gallons per day. Average water demand is 800,000 gallons per day.
