Here’s How To Properly Run Your AC and Heating in the Same Day

Some days in the Fort Wayne area might see a significant swing between high and low temperatures. When this happens, you may wonder whether it’s a good idea to switch between the AC and heat on the same day. It’s okay to do so, but it’s also important to keep a few things in mind in order to reduce stress on your HVAC system and keep costs down.

Don’t Switch in the Middle of a Cycle

You shouldn’t switch to heating or cooling in the middle of a cycle. Instead, switch your home’s thermostat to Auto and allow whichever HVAC system is currently running to finish its cycle completely. Once it does, turn off the thermostat. This reduces strain on your HVAC system and ensures that you aren’t wasting energy.

Wait a Few Minutes Before Adjusting the Temperature

You shouldn’t immediately turn on the other HVAC unit after the first one turns off. Once the current AC or heating cycle finishes, wait five or 10 minutes before adjusting your thermostat to activate the other system. That way, you aren’t running both the heater and air conditioner at the same time or putting unnecessary stress on your HVAC system.

Adjust the Temperature Gradually

Cranking the thermostat in either direction is a bad idea. It won’t make your home heat up or cool any faster, and it can eventually cause wear and tear on your HVAC system. Adjustments of 5 degrees or so are enough to increase your comfort noticeably without wasting energy. Once your heater or AC unit reaches the first target temperature, you can adjust the thermostat again in the direction of your ideal temperature.

Keep Your HVAC System in Good Condition

Proper maintenance is important if you want to use your heater and air conditioner on the same day. Annual HVAC maintenance, performed by skilled professionals, keeps your unit running at peak performance. It also prevents the need for significant repairs before they develop.

Taking advantage of a maintenance agreement can make scheduling tune-ups easy. Some benefits of routine HVAC maintenance include:

  • Keeping repair costs down
  • Diagnostics to help plan for future repairs
  • Lowering environmental impact
  • Extending HVAC system life span
  • Lowering utility costs
  • Service and product discounts
  • Increased safety
  • Warranty support
