The New SEER AC Ratings: Is It Time To Replace Your Air Conditioner?

 Outdoor air conditioning units

On January 1, 2023, the Department of Energy updated HVAC energy efficiency regulations for newly manufactured air conditioning units.

SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) is the metric that measures how much energy an AC uses to cool a home. Each region of the United States has a new minimum SEER rating requirement, including Indiana, where the minimum has been raised from 13 SEER to 14 SEER.

The new SEER regulations might alter your plans and budget for replacing your home’s air conditioner, so you need to know what they are.

What Are the New Regulations in Indiana?

In northern states like Indiana:

  • Air conditioners need a rating of 14 SEER (13.4 SEER2) or higher.
  • Heat pumps must have a rating of 15 SEER (14.3 SEER2) cooling and 8.8 HSPF (7.5 HSPF2) heating or higher.

SEER2 vs. SEER

As part of the update, the Department of Energy also made the testing requirements for determining SEER and HSPF ratings more rigorous.

The updated metrics — SEER2, HSPF2, and EER2 — reflect energy efficiency data that is more accurate and precise. HSPF2 (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) measures heat pump efficiency. EER2 (Energy Efficiency Ratio) is a general HVAC efficiency measurement applied to every unit.

The new metrics are listed on the yellow EnergyGuide sticker attached to each system.

Should I Replace My Air Conditioner?

If your AC is in good condition and has a few years of service life remaining, you don’t need to worry about replacing your system immediately.

However, if you decide to purchase a new air conditioner, you’ll be getting a unit that has at least a 14 SEER (13.4 SEER2) rating, which means your system will help you save more money on your energy bills while keeping your home comfortable throughout the spring and summer.

Here are a few signs that it’s time to replace your air conditioner:

  • Your AC is more than 10 years old.
  • There are hot and cold spots throughout your home.
  • Your energy bills are increasing over time.
  • Your AC needs frequent and/or expensive repairs.
  • Repairs cost more than 50% of the unit’s value.
